Speed art of Death / Der Sensenmann (Richard Kasper, Johannes’ father).

The original concept for Death was inspired by The Grim Reaper from the Swedish film “SEVENTH SEAL” and was meant to be Freyja’s father, Erik, since he’s Swedish. However, considering Erik’s animosity towards his son-in-law Johannes and realizing that version of Death would be too literal (a hunched man cloaked in black), I drew inspiration from one of my all-time favorite “TWILIGHT ZONE” episodes, “Nothing in the Dark.” In this episode, Death disguises himself as a handsome policeman injured by gunfire and convinces an old woman to let him into her home to recover. This episode inspired three OCs: Robert Redford’s portrayal of Death influenced Richard’s final look, the police officer idea led to the creation of Batty Sorensen, and the old woman inspired Sigrid’s mother, Aina.[Sigrid’s character design was inspired by a combination of Sarah from “LABYRINTH” and actress Brooke Shields, who was popular in the 1980s - the time period when she and Richard met]

Unlike his father, Death (who is merciless and stealthy when collecting souls), Johannes prefers a more compassionate approach. He offers options and conditions upfront to those nearing the end of their lives, aiming to ease their transition. Johannes adopts a kindly and angelic demeanor to make crossing the living veil less daunting. However, he is not afraid to instill the same degree of fear as Death when he encounters someone who he believes is undeserving of mercy and care.

I still don’t feel confident with speaking/writing German after studying over 2 years, but I can say my ability to read it has improved to the point I can understand song lyrics (I’m looking at you Rhubarb Barbara - and I thought “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers” and “Shelly sells seashells by the seashore” were mouthfuls).

A Grim Reaper and his junior…
As descendants of Death, both Johannes and Cedrick exhibit black skeletal tattoos when they perform their tasks of collecting souls and eliminating rogue monsters. They also possess “Odin’s Eye” - a unique magical trait exclusive to the Kasper Family. This ability allows them to see souls, lifespans, health conditions, and the strengths and weaknesses of whoever or whatever they gaze upon. When activated, their right green eye glows yellow, while the left blue eye remains normal (in many cultures, it is believed that people with heterochromia can perceive both the earthly and heavenly realms simultaneously).

Stern the Amabie has been sneaking out of her fishbowl for some cookies. At least she’s not using Johannes‘ tea as a hot bath - a teacup is the perfect size for her to soak in.
Stern was found by the Kasper’s Norwegian Forest Cat Klimt, nearly perished by dehydration. Though it’s essential she stays in her fishbowl for safety and health, she tends to crawl out to explore her immediate surroundings and involve herself in whatever a family member is doing (she enjoys reading and watching TV the most).

Heinrich stepped away from collecting souls after marrying Yoko, focusing more on investigating and researching monster sightings; he was known as the “White Ghost of Kiel” with his use of smoke to conceal his identity, while Richard was known as the “Red Devil of Kiel” - even called “Death Incarnate” because of efficient yet gruesome methods (their father Olaf was known as the “Black Skull of Kiel”because of his distinctive burn scars on his face from WW2).

Kim Jun-Yeong, a young man hailing from Busan, South Korea, had aspirations of becoming an Architectural Engineer and was pursuing his studies in Los Angeles. Tragically, his life took a devastating turn during a routine walk to a local convenience store when he fell victim to a robber's gunshot, leaving him to pass away abruptly and alone. It was in this dire moment that Richard Kasper, coincidentally nearby on a mission to track down a rogue monster, intervened to collect Kim's departing soul.
However, Kim's spirit held a strong, unfulfilled yearning to complete his studies, and this desire only intensified during the decades he spent in the Underworld. Recently, he managed to break free from the confines of Death's barrier and returned to the university where he had once pursued his dreams. With a form solidified through condensed ice crystals, Kim resumed his studies, forming an unexpected bond with Tricia Williams, the sole student in the Biology class who could perceive his presence.
Curiously, Hr. Dr. Kasper was summoned to investigate the mysterious cold spells that disrupted Professor Vinnie DeValeur's lectures. This investigation unveiled the truth: Kim was responsible for the temperature fluctuations and was, in fact, a phantom student taking on the guise of a Gwisin. Despite his unique circumstances, Kim remains resolute in his commitment to attend classes diligently and accompany Tricia, even to the point of inciting jealousy when she engages in tutoring sessions with Cedrick. He has made a promise to Death (Richard) and his son to return to the Underworld upon completing his studies, ensuring he remains devoted to his academic pursuits.
