A closer look at two extended family members: Ida & Sabrina Vandenberg. - Ida Baum met Olafur Kasper in college; she felt pity for him having burn scars on his face and scalp from the war; they quickly bonded over their shared background in the occult and love of American music. They married and had Heinrich; Olaf hoped his firstborn was the new incarnation of Death, while Ida took pride in their son wanting to become an occult historian like herself and her parents. It was a surprise when they were expecting a second child; Ida wanted it to be a girl, but both were soon disappointed when it was another boy (Heinrich was happy to have a little brother and gave him the name Richard). Ida was so depressed after giving birth that her parents took the newborn home with them at Johannesburg to let her recover. Richard was returned about 5 years later, but Ida became more disturbed when she overheard her youngest son bring up past events about his father she never heard about, revealing that he was the long awaited incarnation of Death within the Kasper family. Unable to stomach her husband’s past and unhappy not having the daughter she wanted, Ida found love elsewhere with a young American soldier and eloped with him to New York to start a new life with him. She felt some pity towards her oldest child, occasionally sending him presents and letters of encouragement to continue his studies; however, like Olaf, Ida was cold towards Richard - more so when she had her third child, finally the daughter she always wanted. - Sabrina grew up spoiled as an only child; she’s notorious for being posh and cutthroat, but also hardworking and resourceful. It’s not often I’d draw Hr. Dr. Kasper with his parents (Sigrid died a few days after childbirth; Richard “deteriorated” when he was 2-almost-3 years old), but it’s kinda a fun experiment drawing them together just to compare how he looks like to them. It’s pretty obvious that he’d resemble Richard a lot (same coloring, height, etc.), but there’s also quite a bit of Sigrid he inherited (hair style, personality/expressions, etc.). …also it’s another excuse to draw matching plaid outfits influenced by their respective decades, lol. Johannes Faustuz can never get a break from soul collecting because there’s always something or someone dying nearby. Like any task, there’s times it gets so busy he can’t keep up and needs help. Faustuz is also wearing an updated version of his father’s outfit from the 1980s. - Grim Reapers and Monster Hunters are becoming more rare as less people are in tune with the spiritual, mythical, and occult world. And not all souls get collected based on what they are (ie. plant and insect souls are mostly harmless, but animal and human souls - especially those who died suddenly and violently - are extremely dangerous and prone to transforming into monsters that harm the living). Luckily most souls like to gather together and often like to float around the closest Grim Reaper wanting to move on.
