Wunderkind’s Notes: Souls
“
Each living thing has a set time to die when an assigned Grim Reaper is sent to collect the soul once it detaches from the body. In such moments such as an accident or murder, the soul is forcefully removed to lessen the odds of having a "Lost Soul" which could lead to the creation of Monsters or harmful Spirits/Ghosts. If there's a rare case of Life Curses, Death Himself will collect the soul as part of the exchange made by the Spellcaster. If left wandering on their own, most souls will gather in the prescence of Grim Reapers - especially those with close connections with Death Himself. Souls come in many colors and prefer to be round in shape (which makes them easily played and chased away by cats - which explains "The Zoomies" and staring at emepty spaces - and this is one reason why Death and Grim Reapers hate cats).

Featured here are Richard/Death and Sigrid’s son Johannes with his own son Cedrick.
Most say Johannes looks just like Richard, but he has a bit of Sigrid if you look closer (i.e. hairstyle, jawline, and a teeny bit of the eye shape, all traits Sigrid inherited from her father Samuel).
Cedrick is a bit harder to say which relative he looks like the most - he’s blond like his father, both grandfathers, and one of his mother’s cousins (Werner); he does have a hint of freckles on his face and is left-handed - both traits he inherited from Freyja (both Richard and Johannes are ambidextrous; Sigrid’s right-handed).

Richard’s good looks and playful personality often puts a dent in people’s first impression of him as a brawny dumb man when in reality he enjoys tinkering with technology, reading newspapers in various languages, and meticulously planning out each personal encounter as his role of Death.
Even Sigrid’s initial thoughts of Richard were annoyance in having to deal with someone who most likely can’t be serious and would be so behind the times based on his dated sense of fashion, owning a Volkswagen as old as she is, and love for Disco which was considered dead in the 1980s; seeing his more focused and academic side has piqued her curiosity and has her slowly replacing her feelings for her childhood crush Batty with admiration for Richard.

Activation Potions 🧪
All Witches once had to use Potions to cast spells, until one day about 1,000 years ago a new mutation allowed many to be able to tap into their “Magical Potential” (MP) directly to cast spells; because of this mutation, it divided Witches into 2 classes: Wicca (the original Witch) and Enchantress (the new Witch).
Since Enchantresses can easily hide their magical abilities from Non-magical Humans, Wicca had been persecuted and killed nearly to the point of extinction over many centuries; Enchantresses also over time began to associate less with Wicca and deemed them “inferior” despite heavily relying on them to make Potions on their behalf (most Enchantresses have no knowledge of potion making unless they were taught via academy).
Wicca have slightly longer lifespans than Enchantresses, perhaps because they don’t directly have access to their MP (Witches on average live up to 500 years, but can extend it via Life Potion - a difficult recipe obtained by Nature/Life Herself; a Warlock (Male Witch) can live up to 200 years unless he extends it via Life Curse - a pact with Death Himself promising a soul of someone precious).
Sigrid is a “Baby Witch” being only 15-17 years old (compared to her distant cousin Kiya who looks 16 but was born in the 1940s), but she has been studying and practicing to prove herself just as powerful as any Enchantress at the academy (she also has an extremely high amount of MP due to a random mutation).
But this requires drinking a lot of Activation Potions, which often get stolen and shattered by bullying classmates (leading to the creation of concentrated potion capsules she could easily swallow).

Every 3 months the Enchantress Academy holds a debutante ball for the students to showcase their spell casting skills to their family members and invited guests.
Sigrid usually has the most difficult time attracting viewers because she’s often immediately seen as weak and disregarded as the school’s only Wicca unable to cast spells without the use of Activation Potions.
To make up for appearances, Sigrid sews her own gowns, studies complex spells, and tries making concentrated Activation Potions to allow her to maximize her “Magical Potential” (her boyfriend Richard eventually made potion pills easy to swallow and instantly tap into her stored stamina).

#sketchdump featuring Sigrid’s younger half-brother Torben & their father Samuel.
Torben physically takes after his mother (blond hair & brown eyes), but has a similar sweet demeanor like his older sibling.
He’s extremely attached to Sigrid, making him protective towards his classmates at the boys academy (many of them have crushes on her).
He personally didn’t like Sigrid’s childhood crush Batty due to his overall cold behavior - especially towards Sigrid and children in general.
On the other hand, Torben was more than happy meeting Richard seeing how well he treats Sigrid and would return lost balls & toys back to the neighborhood kids; he also thinks Grim Reapers are more interesting than Warlocks because they not only can use teleportation spells but also weapons to fight monsters & collect lost souls.
Samuel is Denmark’s strongest Warlock; he appears to be a man in his 50s, but is over 200 years old & extends his lifespan through life curses, placing him under Death’s watchlist.
Being a proud man, he cursed Sigrid mainly because she wasn’t born a son or even an Enchantress, but also because his daughter was born with a mutation that gave her so much more “Magical Potential” than any European Warlock on record.
Because he cursed their daughter, Aina changed her name and left with Sigrid to set up her flower & oddities shop.
Samuel soon remarried to the Enchantress headmistress Sarah, having Torben a few years later; because Sarah still wanted a daughter, he tolerated her request to allow Sigrid to attend her academy until the life curse takes effect.
Samuel is suspicious of Richard not collecting Sigrid’s soul as her assigned Grim Reaper, but also because he’s the talk of Europe since becoming the new heir of the Kasper bloodline and is Europe’s most powerful man in the occult community; he hopes that there’s no romance between Richard & Sigrid in fear that any child born would replace him (it’s the reason why Sigrid’s death was set before her 20th birthday - making her so young to have a relationship).

As for the song, it’s actually from the 1970s - a little something from Richard’s era since he’s stuck there (Sigrid’s trying her best to get him with the times in regards to his wardrobe and cultural references).
The 1970s had a lot of great music (Disco, Ballards, Rock), and is a decade I find interesting almost in par with the 1980s in regards to media and events (not so much fashion - the 1970s inspired a lot of 1990s fashion, and both decades in regards to clothing kinda sucked in my opinion).

Sigrid was still bitter about being rejected by Batty on Valentine’s Day 2 months prior; she’s also slowly getting more used to Richard’s presence as her assigned Reaper observing the status of her soul (as well being occasional Handyman and Tatzelwurm exterminator at her mother’s flower shop).
She was aware her mother wanted her to pair up with Richard, and knows he really liked her but kept his emotions to a minimum by giving her glances, compliments, and surprise gifts (only after spending the night together when he was lovesick they started becoming more affectionate with each other).
Sigrid admits she finds Richard attractive and that he looks like a popular actor at the time, but didn’t like the fact that he’s a descendant of a family known for killing Witches in the distant past (as well as other historical atrocities such as bodysnatching and experimentation on humans), has a “Bad Boy” reputation as a Playboy, is so much older that he could pass by as a distant cousin or her guardian, and wears clothes from the past decade (he does slowly upgrade his wardrobe when they start dating).
Over the months leading up to the official start of their romance, Sigrid grew to love his “goofy smile and feathered hair”, his terrible Danish with a German accent (he also speak perfect English with an American accent, another turn on for Sigrid), his scent (combination of sweat, formaldehyde, and CK Obsession cologne), and how his odd-colored eyes would gently blink as he placed his coat over her shoulders for warmth.
She was also surprised how much he enjoys playing arcade games, watches American movies and TV, listens to (and sings) popular songs, and is really good with computers and other new tech in the 1980s - proving that he’s been a good match for her all along.

Freyja’s mother Sonja was one of the last Pesta of Norway, and worked as a rare female Grim Reaper until she accidentally was cursed by a Troll with a petrification spell - leading to her slow death turning into a statue (so many Wicca in Europe were killed in the Middle Ages to the point they were almost extinct; very few Wicca are alive, but Enchantresses had thrived because they could hide their magical abilities and not rely on potions as much).
Sonja was also betrothed to marry Heinrich Kasper since she was a powerful Witch, but due to many circumstances, she ended up marrying Erik Ström (this is partly why Erik doesn’t like Johannes - his uncle broke Sonja’s heart; the other is that his father Richard didn’t cure her of petrification, only slowed it [Erik doesn’t know Richard is Death though, so…]).

Sigrid has sweet yet introverted personality with a strong dose of blunt sarcasm; she’s the top student in her school despite being a Wicca due to her extreme amount of “Magical Potential” and ability to cast spells even experienced Enchantresses with ease (as long as she has an ample supply of Activation Potions).
Because she’s a lower class of Witch and unable to cast spells without potions, Sigrid is often bullied by schoolmates and looked down by faculty even though her stepmother is headmistress (in fact, it fuels many to dislike her only because they’re related).
She originally hated Richard, knowing his past as a heartbreaking playboy and being a member of the Kasper Family who had once been hired to kill Witches and other horrifying acts against humanity of all kinds throughout history; but after learning more about his personal interests and true identity as Death, they developed a romance despite their large age gap and her academy’s prohibition on dating.
