Sigrid first met Batty when his family moved to the house next door when she was 3 and he was 10; he was the first boy she seen and liked him ever since. His father Didier owned the local arcade, and every day after school Sigrid went there to play video games just to get a chance to see Batty outside of their home setting. Batty never reciprocated her feelings for him, always calling her “annoying” and “clingy” despite his father and Sigrid’s mother Aina expecting one day he’ll grow to like Sigrid and expected the two will get married someday. When Richard Kasper finally arrived in Copenhagen, Batty started to feel emotions towards Sigrid, ranging from concern to jealousy seeing her falling in love with another man. It wasn’t until Sigrid’s marriage and death that made Batty realize how cruel he had been to her, that he truly did love her after the failure of his own marriage and facing backlash from his father who wished Batty had married Sigrid instead. It’s because of all of his regrets and remorse that he feels resentful towards Johannes whenever he sees him visiting Copenhagen, but Batty also feels pity because Johannes has no memory of Sigrid and is the only living reminder of Sigrid being her son.
