2.5 hours spent on this pic (not including the primary sketches, which took at least 1 hour to make).
I also used different brushes to color Richard, giving him a paint marker look - basically some coloring practice.

I had made an Insta-Story earlier briefly mentioning about how Richard was developed, but I’ll elaborate here:
Originally Freyja’s father Erik was planned to be Death with a design based of Death in the 1957 Swedish film “The Seventh Seal”, but a scrawny pale man in a black cloak didn’t match up with Erik’s boisterous and proud personality - he’s Viking royalty and making him a weapons maker was the better choice (not to mention he hates Johannes, which wouldn’t work well if he was Death since he’d call Johannes a worthless Grim Reaper for the family business - totally not what Johannes is).

Richard was already written out as an “Angel of Death” - a Viking prince who converted to Christianity, became a cardinal only to be killed by another out of jealousy, and was given immortality by evil spirits to take revenge on the descendants of the man who murdered him; therefore making him Death and having his son working for him made perfect sense.
Richard was also described as handsome and cunning, so it also didn’t make sense to make him look like Death from “The Seventh Seal” (and Richard isn’t Swedish); instead he gets based off of Death in one of my favorite “Twilight Zone” episodes titled “Nothing in the Dark” - Death is a handsome man who finally got an old lady to let him in her home so he could take her soul away to eternity (familiar vibes to how Richard is sent to collect Sigrid’s cursed soul).
The actor who played Death was also a popular heartthrob of the 1970s, making it perfect inspiration - Richard’s fashion sense is stuck in the 1970s, he’s known to be a heartbreaking playboy, and he loves Disco during the 1980s when it was declared dead (adds to the insult of “Old Man” he got from Sigrid when they first met).

The Grim Reaper’s wife…

Freyja’s just as capable as her husband Johannes in fighting monsters if left on her own.
As the daughter of an occult weapons maker descended from Viking royalty and a Pesta (a rare female Grim Reaper from Norway), she’s skilled with any weapon light enough to handle with one hand (she prefers axes, hammers, and blades).
Despite her mother being a Reaper, Freyja didn’t inherit the ability to see souls (Grim Reapers are also most commonly male in modern Western Europe; Viking times had many more female Reapers until the spread of Christianity lead to their near extinction due to being accused as Witches).

“The Black Skull of Kiel” and his sons Heinrich & Richard Kasper.
Olafur Kasper was the youngest of 3 sons, the 2nd half of identical twins (his oldest brother was named Rudolf and was born during WW1, his twin shared the same name as the guy who took over their country when they were born - making their nicknames Rudi, Adi, and Oli).
Olaf was often overlooked by his peers and superiors while growing up due to his quiet and timid nature; it wasn’t until after WW2 started certain people took notice of his skills and made him in charge over his older brothers in running a unit of soldiers involved with the Occult.
It was towards the end of the war when he received his nickname “The Black Skull” when he casted a spell to defeat an entire battalion of Russian soldiers at the cost of his brothers’ lives, leaving black burn scars on his face.
Being found wounded by US troops, Olaf served time under American authority contributing his knowledge to defeating the Russians during the Cold War; it was at this time he met his wife Ida and had Heinrich.
As years passed, Ida’s desire for a daughter grew - which led to the unexpected birth of the new incarnation of Death whom Heinrich affectionately named Richard (he wanted a baby brother instead of the sister his parents hoped for); Ida’s disgust for Richard boiled over to the point she left the family for an American soldier and left the country with him (leading to the birth of Sabrina, the Kasper Brothers’ younger half-sister).
Olaf doted on Heinrich as the oldest son & heir, but treated Richard poorly and called him the reason why his wife left (he also despised how much Richard resembles Ida).
Since Heinrich gave up his birthright as heir, Olaf has been even more rough with Richard and insists he marries before he reverts back to being Death permanently.

1980s suit vs 2020s suit
It seems like anything from the 1980s to the 2000s are in and fair game (so basically just rewear whatever you and your family accumulated over the years and / or go to a local thrift shop - there’s more than enough clothing available to choose from and it’s sustainable).
The 1980s really loved their suits, especially Armani for men and the female “Power Suit” with the shoulder pads & tailored skirts.
Sigrid loves dressing up whenever she gets a chance to wear something that’s not her school uniform, especially gowns & suits to show off her sewing skills; Richard finally updated his wardrobe from the 1970s soon after dating Sigrid to show an effort to keep up with appearances (he normally wears a black robe as Death; when summoned back as a human, he tries to wear new current clothing appropriate for his “adjusted age”).
[as Death he’s over 350,000 years old, but as Richard he’s currently ~80]
The 2020s suit is more slim (often called “European-Cut”) and in a way has become less formal with the current Pandemic being a big reason (people just don’t want to dress up for work, especially when working at home).
Johannes doesn’t like dressing up much (he prefers wearing scrubs, sweatpants, & Crocs or Birkenstocks most of the time for work), but he’s willing to put on a suit every now and then with a touch of comfort on his free time (i.e. wearing a T-shirt & athletic shoes instead of a collared shirt, necktie, & loafers).
His teenage son Cedrick wears a similar look to his, but with more colorful patterns & street wear blended in.

Cedrick is a high-energy and intelligent teen boy who has a number of traits from predecessors of both sides of his family.
Most say he takes after his father Johannes (especially his height and Heterochromia), some say he looks like a younger version of his mother’s father Erik (both have short blond hair), but a very few mention a resemblance to his father’s mother Sigrid (he’s about the same age as Sigrid when she first met Death/Richard; it’s said he has her bright smile and her eagerness to learn).

When I was in Berlin, I really had to restrain myself from taking home so many pamphlets because the typography was so beautiful (makes sense - the Gutenberg Press was invented in Germany, not to mention the language looks so clean and pretty printed out on paper; Japanese is also another language I find very beautiful on print).
Seeing all the print kinda triggered the making of this - and it’s been a really long time since I’ve made one of these mock fashion magazine covers featuring my OCs (October 2021 was the last time I made one 😬).
And I apologize for any grammar errors - I’ve only studied German for a year and a half!

When I was in Berlin, I really had to restrain myself from taking home so many pamphlets because the typography was so beautiful (makes sense - the Gutenberg Press was invented in Germany, not to mention the language looks so clean and pretty printed out on paper; Japanese is also another language I find very beautiful on print).
Seeing all the print kinda triggered the making of this - and it’s been a really long time since I’ve made one of these mock fashion magazine covers featuring my OCs (October 2021 was the last time I made one 😬).
And I apologize for any grammar errors - I’ve only studied German for a year and a half!
