Kasper Grim Reapers: Hansel (Hanzo), Johannes Faustuz, Richard, and Cedrick.
💀
Hansel is half Asian (Tante Yoko is Japanese with some Korean ancestry), and only takes up the role as a Grim Reaper when his younger cousin Faustuz is away busy abroad from Kiel.
Richard is the actual Grim Reaper (Der Sensenmann): Death Himself.
He gets a human incarnation whenever Fate feels like giving him a reward (usually once every 500-1,000 years), but can only live as a human for a short amount of time (as short as 15, no longer than 40 years).
He can only be summoned by one of his living descendants if needed and can have a temporary human body for up to two weeks before turning back to his skeletal form.
Faustuz is Death’s son and current heir of the Kasper bloodline with “Odin’s Eye”, an ability that allows him to see a monster’s weaknesses.
His son Cedrick also has “Odin’s Eye”, and is his Junior Reaper accompanying him whenever there’s a rogue monster or wandering souls floating around.

A week off and the boats had long sailed away from the canal, but it’s still the end of June, so…

It’s kinda a paper doll of Richard featuring something he would be wearing for Kiel Week.
His human character design almost always has him wearing a shirt with a 1970s-80s logo design tied to his hometown via county flag, city/state flag colors, text, and/or sailboats.
(The Kaspers are from Kiel where an annual festival of boats is held in June; Kiel Woche is also Germany’s 2nd largest festival after Oktoberfest)
There’s a lot of reasons why Kiel was picked as the Kasper’s hometown - the main ones are that boats are associated with Death and the journey to the Afterlife (the Kaspers are Grim Reapers), and the name “Kiel” is similar to the word “Keel” which is the backbone of a ship that keeps the whole unit together as one piece (Kaspers are known to be very loyal to their family and who they serve).
Kiel is in part of Jutland that was once ruled by Denmark, making them descendants of Vikings who were masters of boats and the sea; Kiel also starts with the letter “K” like “Kasper”, so yarp - it can’t get any more literal than that.
River cities like Hamburg, Bonn, or Cologne technically could’ve work instead since they have boats as well, but it feels a bit off…
Kiel was also historically a naval port and has a cool coastal climate (two things I hold dear to my heart as a Navy Brat spending my early years living next to the ocean).
And cool coastal areas tend to be foggy, which adds to the creepy ghostly vibes the Kaspers give off as descendants of Death.

Stern the Amabie was named so by Hr. Dr. Kasper because she basically has the shape of a star. ⭐️
If she’s not in her fishbowl, Stern would probably most likely be bathing in a hot cup of green tea or sitting next to a pile of magazines and reading them with some classical music playing on the background.

So how does being an incarnation work?
Death’s essence gets transplanted into an assigned unborn body by Fate Herself and is allowed to live as a human for no longer than 35-40 years, therefore he often lived recklessly for fun (which is why he never married and had children - until he unexpectedly became the heir of the Kasper Bloodline when his older brother Heinrich gave up his title, forcing him to look for a bride).
Often times the same families are chosen to raise Death over generations, especially if they have a lot of resources and particular abilities that he finds fascinating (Death has been reborn in the Kasper Family twice before becoming Richard and is fond of their “Odin’s Eye” and notoriously so-called “evil” reputation within the occult community).
If Death grows fond of a person during his limited lifetime, he will keep their soul by his side for eternity.
Currently he has over 40,000 souls in his personal collection over the 350,000+ years he’s existed, often rotating favorites (one of them his older brother Heinrich).
One soul he keeps by his side almost all the time is his beloved Sigrid, but she does occasionally like to wander away on her own to visit living relatives (Cedrick had always wondered why there’s a pink soul continuously floating in and out of the house for years, so he wants to cast a spell to reveal its true identity).

He’s been able to transform into Death since he was about 22, the estimated age when the last bone in the human body full fuses - making the incarnation’s body fully matured.
With each transformation, a little piece gets wasted away from the inside out, leading to an early “death” by age 35-40 and forcing him back into a permanent skeletal form until Fate decides when he can live as a human again - usually once in 1,000 years (Death has been reborn within 150-500 years depending on Fate’s agenda; he’s also been reborn twice before within the Kasper bloodline, giving the family its reputation as “the tools of Death”).
Richard was nearing his expiration when he met Sigrid, making her one of his last victims as an incarnation; normally he’s merciless when collecting souls, but seeing Sigrid somehow tugged at his heartstrings and made him pity her cursed condition by helping Sigrid live as much of a fulfilled life - resulting in marriage and having a son with her (in fact, he was so in love with her that he decided to keep Sigrid’s soul by his side after her death).
If a Reaper needs Death’s assistance, only his descendants can summon him with a spell that temporarily gives back his human form until the task is done (usually within 2 days, no more than a week).

Another #sketchdump with some extra tacked on the end.
💕Sigrid often gets teased by her mother Aina whenever she’s around Richard, especially when she’s caught chatting with him instead of working at the flower shop (both will talk nonstop about video games and sci-fi movies).
It didn’t take long before Aina would also tease Richard, asking when he’ll propose and give her grandchildren.
📚Sigrid and two classmates at the all-girls (enchantress) academy.
She was bullied for not being very rich (her father abandoned her and Aina, leaving them broke and Sigrid with less than 20 years of life), and relying on plants to create spells instead of “one’s inner ability” (enchantresses tend to be from high-born families with inherited wealth; using plants is also considered “primitive” to modern enchantresses, thus why Sigrid and Aina are both called “witches”).
Despite this, Sigrid excelled in her studies and was ranked top student in the academy - only adding to the ire of her classmates.
Her classmates were quick and eager to get Sigrid expelled when it was revealed she had been secretly dating; but since she died, they’ve expressed regret for their cruelty - especially after seeing Aina with her grandson.
💐Sigrid delivering a bouquet with her neighbor’s/home room teacher’s cat Hedy; she loves making and delivering flower bouquets because it brings joy to others.
She also enjoys riding her bike to see the main sights of Copenhagen to briefly escape the academy and flower shop.
Her pink bicycle is now ridden by her grandson Cedrick who uses it to pick up groceries and other supplies the many critters at home need.

Witches
Wicca are the original class of Witch (and they hate being called Witches - they prefer titles such as “Herbal Healers” and “Medicine Women”) who create potions from plants and animals to cast spells.
Because of their vast knowledge of healing and curses frightened Human society over the ages, most had been executed - leaving only a few families of Wicca alive (Aina’s bloodline is one of the oldest from the Nordic and Slavic region of Europe).
Enchantresses, on the other hand, evolved from Wicca over the ages to not rely on magic potions and cast spells by directly accessing their “Magical Potential” (MP).
But because they have ability to hide their magical abilities, they’ve become ignorant of the “Old Ways” and discriminatory towards Wicca - allowing them to become part of the upper class within the Occult community.
Richard has a deep hate towards Enchantresses (his Ex-Fiancée Sheila was one) mainly because of their snobbish behavior and mistreatment towards those they view as inferior (Sheila was verbally abusive towards his sister-in-law Yoko and his nephew and niece due to their Asian ancestry; he immediately broke off their engagement when he saw her force Yoko to carry her bags from an extravagant shopping trip that used up most of his income, leaving him nearly bankrupt).

Sigrid never picked up a so-called “Enchantress’ Air” while attending the academy despite being a Wicca bullied by her Enchantress classmates.
The Headmistress of the academy was also her stepmother, and she thought it’d be funny seeing a Wicca struggle amongst Enchantresses.
But it backfired when it was revealed that Sigrid had the highest MP after using potions - making her the academy’s top student.
Richard was also happy that his new girlfriend was a sweet-natured Wicca, adding more insult and ire towards his Ex after what he’s been through to maintain their relationship (Sheila tried getting back with Richard because she wants the notoriety of the Kasper name).

Richard’s true form as Death💀(a.k.a. “The Grim Reaper” or “Der Sensenmann” in the Kaspers’ native language).

While as a human incarnation, Richard transforms into Death when he’s in close personal contact with something or someone that needs their soul immediately removed by Fate’s orders.
He’s been able to transform into Death since he was about 22, the estimated age when the last bone in the human body full fuses - making the incarnation’s body fully matured.
With each transformation, a little piece gets wasted away from the inside out, leading to an early “death” by age 35-40 and forcing him back into a permanent skeletal form until Fate decides when he can live as a human again - usually once in 1,000 years (Death has been reborn within 150-500 years depending on Fate’s agenda; he’s also been reborn twice before within the Kasper bloodline, giving the family its reputation as “the tools of Death”).
Richard was nearing his expiration when he met Sigrid, making her one of his last victims as an incarnation; normally he’s merciless when collecting souls, but seeing Sigrid somehow tugged at his heartstrings and made him pity her cursed condition by helping Sigrid live as much of a fulfilled life - resulting in marriage and having a son with her (in fact, he was so in love with her that he decided to keep Sigrid’s soul by his side after her death).
If a Reaper needs Death’s assistance, only his descendants can summon him with a spell that temporarily gives back his human form until the task is done (usually within 2 days, no more than a week).

•Normally Richard hates cats because they’re constantly attracted to him and chase unclaimed wandering souls away like yarn balls (annoying for Reapers, especially when he’s the actual Grim Reaper Death Himself; this is why Kaspers have pet dogs, especially Hellhounds).
But since meeting Sigrid (who loves cats), he’s been able to tolerate them more - up to the point he’s attached to the neighborhood tomcat Odin and Sigrid’s neighbor’s cat Hedy.
•Sigrid often gets cold whenever she’s out and about.
She’s not fond of Richard’s fur coat fashion-wise (she said it makes him look like a wild bear), but as soon as he wraps her in it, she immediately forgets how much she hates it with its warmth and scent (Richard wears Calvin Klein Obsession cologne).
•Sigrid’s childhood crush Batty constantly rebuffs her affection over the years, finally up to the point he started dating an older girl from her academy and recently proposed.
She initially took out her heartbroken frustrations out on Richard when they first met, but with each visit to her mother’s flower shop, Sigrid slowly became attached to him despite his reputation as a Playboy and true identity as Death.
She’s finally opening up, wondering if he’d like to go to the formal dinner with her at the academy (I might draw up something with this idea in mind; and because it’s a masquerade, Richard could hide his true form under a mask…).

Because Hr. Dr. Kasper looks almost like a carbon-copy of his father, he grows his hair out long - which is straight and silky just like his mother Sigrid’s.

Sigrid and Richard at her academy’s masquerade-themed formal dinner.

The annual formal dinner is the only time students can bring a potential date to campus (dating is prohibited until they finished school, at about 21 years old; Sigrid wouldn’t live up to that age due to her curse, so she had to keep her romance with Richard secret).
Everyone at the academy was shocked to see that Sigrid actually brought a guest with her, assuming she’ll be alone or not show up due to being rejected by her childhood crush Batty and no other boys in the neighborhood interested dating her since she doesn’t have much time left to live.
And she didn’t bring any ordinary guy with her - it was the very Reaper assigned to take her soul when her curse takes effect: the notorious youngest son of Europe’s deadliest Reaper “The Black Skull of Kiel” called “Death Incarnate” because of his swift and gruesome method of killing monsters and collecting souls from those who are due.
Sigrid also induced a lot of jealousy amongst the girls not only because she was paired with a much older and more refined partner compared to their male guests, but also the heir of the Kasper Family, which despite its dark history is an ancient and powerful bloodline within the occult world (Sigrid herself is descended from a long line of powerful Slavic witches and the daughter of Denmark’s most powerful Warlock, but ended being a Wicca unable to cast spells without the assistance of potions made from plants and animals; she’s also the academy’s headmistress’ stepdaughter).
It’s still a night many talk about amongst faculty and alumni over the years since Sigrid’s death, especially when they happen to see her son visiting Copenhagen.
